Baby Steps

an older poem i wrote about someone i loved

Baby Steps

I hear your laugh

dressed in honey, it stamps my face with a smile,

I see your smile

beaming with sunlight, holding the power to crack open the shells that trap others in darkness,

I feel the tone of your voice,

wrapped in sugar, so sweet I can’t help but listen,

But then I look into your eyes,

The message is different.

Through your eyes, I see the shattered pieces of glass still stuck in your heart, causing you to bleed.

Still.

Still when certain words are said or questions are asked,

Yes, I hear your laugh,

I see your smile,

I feel your tone

But when I look into your eyes, I see them wince as if those words still press on the glass stuck in your heart,

I love you.

but I can’t heal you.

For I know only The Creator can do that through your baby steps,

until then, I will wait here.

I will celebrate with your laugh, dance with your smile, and embrace the tone of your voice,

And I will wait for the day when I look into your eyes and see them sparkle,

without bleeding of the shards of glass that made a home in your heart for so long.

Until then, baby steps.
